Chapter 13

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving was brutally cold in New York. After enduring a not–so–relaxing flight out of Portland International Jetport, Luca finally arrived at JFK. He had reached the airport in Maine just in time to meet the rest of the rowdy, holiday crowd. For the first time in a long while, he found himself pondering whether giving up use of the family jet had been such a good idea, a decision he’d made after concluding it didn’t suit his new laid–back image as a country boy. Four screaming babies into the flight, he’d started to silently curse that line of reasoning.

Deep down, he knew the flight wasn’t the sole root of his annoyance. It was time to face the music. Loving on Sheila had been divine. Once he’d given in completely, they hadn’t been able to get enough of one another and had virtually spent the last four days in each other’s arms. That was until he opened his fat mouth and pissed her off. Apparently, he had a lot to learn about women and this whole love thing.

As the driver approached his childhood home, Luca’s anxiety grew tenfold. The feeling escalated into full–blown butterflies once he exited the vehicle and entered the massive structure. “Looking beautiful as always.”

“Oh you,” she gushed, playfully slapping his chest. “Papa has taught you well.”

“Yeah. Speaking of Pops, where is he?”

His mom sighed. “His usual place. At least he hasn’t locked himself away all alone today. Drago and Tyler are in there with him.”

Great. “Have the girls arrived yet?” he asked, trying to hide the disappointment of not being able to face his father alone.

“No, caro. Cyndi will be in later this evening, and Maria may not arrive until tomorrow. Evy and Rie are in the kitchen though, if you’re up for sisterly substitutes,” she added mockingly. An impish smile crossed her face, and those dark eyes lit up with her mischief.

Luca held up his palms, warding off her sinful words. “I’ll pass on that one.”

A hearty laugh rang from his mother, the sound not much different from Sheila’s. At that moment, Luca realized that old saying about boys falling for their mamas really did hold some truth.

It wasn’t just the laugh that brought his girl to mind, but the similarity of their warm smile and the hint of coltishness his moms now held in her eyes. They were both strong in their own way and possessed no–nonsense personalities. He knew
